Jason's newest film project puts him in twelve weeks of shooting in various location in Spain, for a Spanish Film officially sponsored by two states, as well as by Portugal, Italy, and Germany, according to various news reports.
The Escorial Conspiracies is set in 16th century Spain, where a high official of the government, played by Jason, is involved in plots against King Phillip II. Jason plays the king's own assassin, or planner of assassinations, who has been in charge of putting down the many enemies perceived as dangerous by the fabulously wealthy King. Also involved is a beautiful courtier, played by Julia Ormond, who is Jason's character's lover, and perhaps also his enemy!
Sony is in charge of distribution, so perhaps there will be an English script version, as well as a Spanish script version. At any rate, regardless of the language, and my dislike of reading those lines of English on the screen, if that is all I can have to see new images of our beautiful Jason, bearded and costumed, I will buy it the first day it is available.
Here are some beautiful shots of the 16th century Spanish building erected by King Phillip II, taken from a tourist website on google.
There were no interior room shots available except in the Chapel, but it is to be hoped that the Spanish filmer will use this gorgeous building and its environs will be used in the filming.
Will we see Jason in Tudor-style tights, brocaded doublets, lovely exaggerated codpieces, with some armor sometimes, duelling expertly as we know he can do?
Will we see Jason and lovely ladies in gorgeous velvet, silk, or other handsome clothes, falling into his arms and then into some antique bed in a lovely room?'
Plot notes in Variety say it is a story of political intrigue in the court of Phillip II.
It might pay to read some Spanish History. If nothing else, at least look it up in the Encyclopedia! Phillip II married Mary Tudor, daughter of Henry VIII and Catharine of Aragaon, who died without giving him children. He then married Mary of Portugal and they had children. The great wealth of the newly discovered and exploited Americas was pouring gold, silver, emeralds, all manner of slaves, into Spanish hands and Phillip II was the profligate spender of those millions of dollars as he tried to defeat England and grab control of other nations in Europe.
