It is legendary among wizards that the first Malfoy, a very dark and powerful Viking Wizard and Shaman, whose father had brought the victory to Roland at the pass, accompanied William the Bastard in 1066, coming here to isolate himself and his bloodline, along with his immense fortune, from European raiders and wizards. It is said of course that much of that fortune had been stolen from the hidden treasure of Charlemagne. The first Malfoy, taking that elegant and descriptive French name, got permission from the Overlord to build a strong motte and bailey type fortress at the high overlook between two converging streams. This point of strong rock had long been a fortified place, and the ghosts of many people from the far past inhabit the lower depths of the Malfoy Castle!
The Motte and Bailey, pictured at far left above, was well and carefully built, first of earthen pile, earthen cellar, and strong wooden walls, all surrounded by a good spring-fed moat. As with the other hundred such structures flung up by the Invader and his son, the biggest danger was not from outside raiders, but from inside carelessness with fire. For any such structure was primarily of harvested pine trees, and often the kitchens brought disaster. The drawing above shows a renovation after a vicious fire, the wall of the square stone keep with the six guard towers and the strongly fortified gate, having been well-built, and plenty of good, strong quarters inside for men, horses, supplies, and the reigning Malfoy Overlord with his family.
If you will magnify and read the printed pages, you will remember from previous posts that at that early time, Malfoy men were especially trained in their chosen ways, which included selecting a strong young woman of decent bloodlines to bear the Malfoy heir--one son. Wives, mothers, and daughters were never listed by name by any Malfoy Overlord, so tracing the female side of these families becomes a matter of finding graves or pieces of household goods engraved with some unconnectable name.
The usual custom was for a Malfoy Overlord to take charge of his property, find as much pleasure anywhere he wished, then seek a wife, preferably a young woman who might not understand that Malfoy male wizards chose to look their most handsome, most clean, most muscular, by personal magic, bewitching any young woman they wanted, marrying her in the Malfoy household, watching her carefully, and then a few months after she gave birth to their healthy son and heir, mysteriously banish her perhaps by murder, perhaps by simple magic, or relegate her to servant status and let her die naturally of disappointment and loneliness. The son must then be trained by whip and curse till he knew his place as an evil wizard, loving no one, valuing only himself, and his position as Malfoy Overlord.
